Repair or Replace? How We Decide — and How You Should

Age Is Evidence, Not a Verdict

A component’s age tells you something. It does not tell you everything. An older fixture, pipe, valve, or water heater does not automatically require replacement.

The right recommendation depends on condition, the cause of the failure, parts availability, whether the repair would be reliable, access, safety, and code — not on a number.

When Replacement Is Honestly the Answer

• The failure is in the body of the component itself — a leaking water heater tank cannot be repaired.
• Parts are no longer available.
• The repair would not be reliable, and you would be calling someone again shortly.
• The existing installation cannot be brought to code without replacement.
• Safety is genuinely at stake.

When Repair Is the Better Buy

• The failure is at a fitting, valve, or connection rather than the component.
• The part is available and the rest of the assembly is sound.
• The problem is a symptom of something else — pressure, water quality, a stoppage — and fixing that cause solves it.

The Question We Ask That Others Skip

Why did this fail?

If a water heater failed early, replacing it without asking why just resets the clock on the same failure. High pressure, a failed pressure-reducing valve, or heavy scale will do the same thing to the new unit.

The replacement is the easy part. The diagnosis is the valuable part.

How You Should Decide

Ask what the options are — plural. Ask what each one buys you. Ask what happens if you do the cheaper thing. And notice whether the person answering seems more interested in explaining or in closing.

A plumber willing to talk you out of work is worth keeping.
