How to Read Your Water Meter to Find a Hidden Leak
This takes ten minutes, costs nothing, and is the single most useful thing a homeowner can do before calling a plumber.

Step 1: Shut Everything Off
Turn off every fixture in the house. No running taps, no toilets refilling, no dishwasher, no washing machine, no ice maker cycling. If you have irrigation on a timer, shut it off too — irrigation is one of the most common culprits.
Then leave it alone for a few minutes.
Step 2: Find the Meter and Look at It
Your meter is usually near the street, in a box at ground level. Most meters have a small triangular or star-shaped dial — the low-flow indicator. It is designed to spin at even the smallest flow.
With everything in the house off, that indicator should be perfectly still.
Step 3: Read the Result
If it is not moving: you probably do not have a continuous leak. Your high bill may be usage, irrigation, or a leak that is intermittent (like a toilet flapper).
If it is moving: water is going somewhere with every fixture off. That is a leak, and it is running right now.
Step 4: Narrow It Down
If you can find your main shutoff at the house and close it, then check the meter again: if the meter stops, the leak is inside or under the house. If the meter keeps moving, the leak is in the service line between the meter and the house — often a yard leak.
That single test tells a plumber an enormous amount before he even arrives.
What Not to Do Next
Do not start digging, do not open floors, and do not cut into walls based on a guess about where the water is going.
A moving meter tells you there is a leak. It does not tell you where. Finding that is what leak detection is for.
