What Hard Water Actually Is

Hard water simply means water carrying dissolved minerals — largely calcium and magnesium. It is not dangerous, and it is not a defect. It is just what comes out of the ground in this part of Texas.

The problem is what those minerals do over time: they precipitate out as scale.

Where the Damage Actually Happens

• Inside your water heater. Scale settles on the bottom of a tank and insulates the burner surface, so the unit works harder and lasts less long.
• Inside tankless heat exchangers. This is where hard water is most expensive. A fouled exchanger loses efficiency and, left alone, fails.
• In valves and fixtures. Stiff shutoffs, dripping faucets, spotted glass.
• In appliances. Dishwashers and washing machines are not immune.

None of this happens dramatically. It happens over years, and most people never connect the failed water heater to the water.

What a Softener Can Do

A properly selected and installed softener can reduce scale-related problems. That may extend equipment life, improve how fixtures perform, and reduce spotting.
