Galvanized Supply Lines

Galvanized steel pipe corrodes from the inside out. The interior gradually narrows with rust and scale until water pressure quietly declines over years.

The classic symptom is “the pressure has gotten worse and I do not know when it started.” Often the homeowner has adapted to it so slowly they stopped noticing.

Cast Iron Drains

Cast iron drain lines scale internally, corrode, and eventually crack. They are common in homes from the pre-war era through the mid-century, and in many older San Antonio neighborhoods they are still in service.

Recurring stoppages in a house with cast iron are frequently about the pipe, not about what anyone put down it.

Clay Sewer Laterals and Tree Roots

Older sewer laterals were commonly clay, laid in sections with joints. Mature trees — the oaks that make neighborhoods like Alamo Heights and Olmos Park beautiful — send roots toward the moisture at those joints.

Roots do not usually break sound pipe. They exploit joints and existing cracks. Cabling cuts them back; it does not stop them returning.

Foundations and Soil That Moves

Slab-on-grade construction combined with expansive clay soil, drought, and heat means the ground under a house does not sit still. That movement stresses the plumbing beneath it.

That is why slab leaks are a recurring San Antonio conversation and not an exotic event.

The Important Part: Age Is Not a Verdict

An older pipe is not automatically a failed pipe, and no honest plumber should tell you your whole house needs repiping without evaluating it.
